Wiley Eugene Gene Pool, age 88 of Savonburg, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2018 at NMRMC in Chanute. Gene was born Oct. 3, 1929 near Uniontown to Roy and Daisy (Hester) Pool.
He graduated from Elsmore High School in 1947. Gene enlisted in the Army and served his country from 1951 to 1953, receiving awards for being an outstanding sharp shooter. Gene worked at Monarch Cement Company for 38 years and is remembered for his passion of farming and raising animals. He had many years of farming and using his numerous skills and talents. He was known for his love and enjoyment of visiting with his neighbors, friends and family. Gene was a member of Leanna Christian Church.
Gene married Leona Mae White on Jan. 12, 1951 in Chanute. Together they had two children, a son, Jerry Pool and a daughter, Joyce Allen. They enjoyed 67 years of marriage.
Gene is survived by his wife, Leona, of the home; children, Jerry Eugene Pool of Mulberry, and Joyce Ann Allen and husband Michael of Chanute; grandchildren Candace and Jacob Cauble, Brandi Oilar, Chad Pool, Stacey and Christy Allen, Carissa and Jason Brannan, Flint and Kiley Allen, Kayla Brightman; 15 great-grandchildren Kip, Skylar, Ethan, Isaac, Stone, Sawyer, Jonathan, Taylynn, Alyvia, Kynna, Jaycee, Hadlee, Bodee and Sylvee.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Velva (Thompson) Burche.
The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Countryside Funeral Home Johnson Chapel at 101 N. Highland in Chanute. A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Leanna Christian Church east of Chanute. Interment will follow at Leanna Cemetery. The Chanute Honor Guard will be in charge of military honors.
