Gary Ambrose Smith, 69, of Iola died Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at his home.
He was born Jan. 10, 1942, in Iola, to Ambrose John and Rachel R. (Kraus) Smith. He graduated from Iola High School in 1960.
He was married to Stonna Zyskowski and they later divorced.
He worked for the City of Iola for 31 years and was street and alley foreman when he retired. He also helped Gordon Conger in his farming operation for 20 years.
He married Sue Freeman Laymon, and they made their home in Iola.
He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Eagles Lodge.
He is survived by his wife of the home; a son, Shane, Moran; a daughter, Shelley Davis, Yates Center; two stepsons, Mike Laymon, Yates Center, and Kim Laymon, Iola; a brother, Chuck, Copperas Cove, Texas; a sister, Sally Robinson, Kansas City, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A brother, Marty, died earlier.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel in Iola.
Parish Rosary will be recited at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. John’s Catholic Church in Iola, followed by a Mass at 10:30 a.m. The Rev. Robert B. Wachter will be celebrant. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Iola.
