Frances Pauline Smith, 90, Iola, died Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011, at Moran Manor.

Frances was born Sept. 14, 1921 in Colony, the daughter of Lloyd and Ethel (Heath) Weatherman. She grew up in Colony and graduated from Colony High School, Iola Community College, and began teaching school at Moran.

On Sept. 24, 1944, she married Raymond D. Smith in Colony and began making their home in Iola. She was skilled at cooking, interior decorating and landscaping her home.

After raising her family, she returned to work for the Iola school system and remained there until her retirement.

She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola, Iola Music Club, Iola Garden Club, Iola B.P.W., Sorosis Club, D.A.R. and many other organizations in the community.

Survivors include two sons, Vince, Grain Valley, Mo., and Mike and his wife, Lana, Kansas City; one sister, Arley Womack, Emporia; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, many lifelong friends and special caregivers, Kim and Larry Peterson, Iola.

She was preceded in death by her husband Raymond, twin brother Robert Weatherman and infant brother James “Jimmy Jay” Weatherman.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola. Burial will follow in the Colony cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Wesley United Methodist Church; Friends of the Bowlus; or charity of the donor’s choice. Memorial gifts may be left with Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel of Iola, which is in charge of arrangements.

The family has requested no floral tributes.
