Fayette L. Walters, 91, Iola, died Friday, May 2, 2014, at Allen County Regional Hospital.
Fayette was born Feb. 27, 1923, in Allen County, the daughter of Harry and Silva (Morrison) Smoot. She attended Prairie Rose Rural School, Gas schools and graduated from Iola High School in 1940.
On Sept. 15, 1945, Fayette married L. Wayne Walters in Wichita. They made their home in Allen County, where she worked as deputy register of deeds for Allen County. She later worked as Gas city clerk until she retired in 1985. Mr. Walters preceded her in death March 16, 1995.
Fayette enjoyed traveling. Her memberships include Trinity United Methodist Church, National Campers and Hikers Association, FCE and NARFE. She also served as a 4-H leader and on the Allen County Fair Board.
Survivors are her son, Larry Walters, Lawrence; a daughter, Cheryl Walters, Topeka; a brother, Cecil R. Smoot and wife Dorothy, Mesa, Ariz.; three sisters, Lara Nell Stout, Topeka, Eva Jean Catron, Winterset, Iowa, and Crysta Harrington and husband Glen, Linwood; a sister-in-law, Margaret Smoot, Iola; three grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, daughter-in-law Connie Walters and brother Rex Smoot.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola, where visitation will be an hour prior to the service. Burial will be at LaHarpe Cemetery.
