Fannie Sue Whitworth, El Dorado, Ark., passed away peacefully at the age of 94 at Windsor Place in Iola. She was born Oct. 16, 1922 in Texarkana, Texas, the daughter of Lawrence Lee and Mary Kate Young. She grew up in Texarkana and graduated from Texarkana High School. She then attended business school in Austin,Texas.
On Sept. 22, 1941, Fannie Sue married Wilburn J. “Whit” Whitworth. After Whit’s service in World War II, they moved to El Dorado, Ark., in 1945 where they lived with their son, Jerry Lee.
Fannie Sue was an active member of First Christian Church, where she was involved with CWF, circle, Sunday school, church bazaars and fellowship dinners. She was known for her culinary skills as a great “Southern cook” and loved baking and taking her pies and cakes to neighbors or others in need.
She was a secretary for Lincoln Income Life Insurance, worked for McWilliams Furniture, and The Honey Tree. She loved selling children’s clothes and was quite the fashion expert.
She enjoyed square dancing with friends, camping in Colorado with family, and picking peaches, blackberries and blueberries; especially with her grandchildren.
Travel was a passion for Fannie Sue, who was truly a woman on the go. She and husband Whit traveled to Europe several times, took numerous bus mystery trips with friends, cruises and car trips in order to see all of God’s handiwork in the USA.
Preceding her in death was her beloved husband, Wilburn J Whitworth, and a brother, Billy Young.
Survivors include a son, Jerry Lee Whitworth and wife Sharon, Iola; granddaughter, Tara Hartman and husband Brett, Mechanicsburg, Pa.; grandson, Charlie Whitworth and wife Jill, Burlington; seven great-grandchildren, Caleb, Nathan, Seth and Anna Hartman and Cooper, Tucker and Karlie Whitworth.
Visitation will be Friday in El Dorado, Ark., at Young’s Funeral Home, with a graveside service following at Columbia County Cemetery.
