Ernest W. Stanley Jr., 89, Humboldt, passed away Thursday, Dec. 8, 2016, at his home.  

Ernest was born on May 8, 1927, in rural Independence, the son of Omer Ernest and Jessie (Green) Stanley. He grew up in the Independence area, farming with his dad before he was drafted into the United States Navy in August 1945. He served from 1945 to 1946 as an F2c.

On May 12, 1948, Ernest married Norma Mae Hall in Independence. Norma preceded him in death on July 1, 1988. 

Ernest worked in the oil fields upon discharge from the service, and in his spare time he enjoyed farming, hunting, fishing and camping with family and friends. He worked for years as an Oil Field Superintendent until he retired in 1989. He was a member of the Humboldt United Methodist Church and the American Legion.

Ernest is survived by sons Danny Michael (Suzanne) Stanley, Randy Allen (Becky) Stanley and Ronnie Douglas (Etta) Stanley, all of Humboldt; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchldren.

Ernest was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Norma; brothers, Omer, Lewis and Glen; and sisters, Charlotte Augustine, Frances Shearheart, Lola Babb and Jeanette Tucker.

A visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Countryside Funeral Home, 908 Central St., Humboldt. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Humboldt United Methodist Church. Interment will be at Mount Hope Cemetery in Humboldt. Military honors will be conducted by The Chanute Honor Guard. 

Memorials have been suggested to the Humboldt United Methodist Church and may be left with or mailed to the funeral home, Countryside Funeral Home 101 N. Highland, Chanute, KS 66720.
