Elaine M. Miles, 91, died Wednesday, April 27, 2011, at Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg.
She was born on Nov. 12, 1919, to George and Verle (Hummiston) Marsh at the family farmhouse outside of Kincaid. She graduated from Kincaid High School and began teaching elementary school soon after. She attended Parsons Junior College and graduated from Kansas State Teacher’s College (now Pittsburg State University) with a bachelor of science in education and a master of science in education. She taught in Hutchinson, Frontenac and Pittsburg and other southeast Kansas elementary schools.
On June 6, 1942, she married Clarence W. (Jack) Miles who was an industrial arts professor at Pittsburg State University for many years.
She was a long-time member of First Presbyterian Church of Pittsburg and was a member of the Ruth Circle. She was a member of the PSU faculty wives, A.A.U.W. and the Pittsburg Music Club.
She most recently was a resident of Via Christi Community, formerly known as Cornerstone Village.
She is survived by two daughters, Janis Saket and Curt, Pittsburg, and Diane Shaw and Mike, Lowell; grandchildren, David Goble and Anna, Farlington, Mitchell Shaw and Tina, Independence, and Melissa Tillman and Bill, Linwood; a sister, Nadine Sutton, Mesa, Ariz.; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister, Fern Marsh, a brother, Marion Marsh, and a grandson, Greg DeChicchio.
Graveside memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the National Cemetery in Fort Scott with Sister Ann Meyer officiating.
Friends may call to sign the register until 5 p.m. today at Brenner Mortuary in Pittsburg.
