Elaine L. Brown, 98, Iola, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2017, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center, Chanute.
She was born Sept. 30, 1919, in Emporia, the daughter of Fred Dewey and Ethel Marie (Brown) Dobson. Elaine graduated from Emporia High School and attended Emporia State University. She taught school for several years.
Elaine married Donald W. Brown in 1942 and they made their home in Wichita. In 1960, they moved to Iola and she worked at the Iola Public Library for 32 years where she was known and loved by several generations of Iolans as the children’s librarian.
Elaine was a member of First Christian Church, D.A.R., Beta Sigma Phi, and the Wee Wick Depression Club. Elaine enjoyed reading, gardening, and identifying and feeding birds. She was very involved in the community as a volunteer.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Ethel Dobson; husband, Donald Brown in 1976; one daughter, Karen Brown Hostetler; one grandson, Samuel Morris; and one sister, Maxine Cartright.
Elaine is survived by five daughters, Sharon Brown, Glidden, Wisc., Kathy Brown George (Larry), Junction City, Patricia Brown (Mark) of Chapel Hill, N.C., Jennifer Brown Westerman (Bill), Chanute, and Sara Morris (John), Augusta; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Highland Cemetery, Iola. Family will greet friends from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, 1883 U.S. 54, Iola.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to Castaways Animal Shelter, and may be left in care of the funeral home.
