Dorothy Ruth Drain, 90, Yates Center, died Friday, Jan. 9, 2015, at Mercy Hospital in Independence.
Dorothy was born July 16, 1924, in Tonganoxie, the daughter of Ralph and Laura (Madsen) Karr. She grew up in the Tonganoxie area until the family moved to a farm north of Moran in the 1940s.
On Oct. 16, 1954, Dorothy married Charles R. Drain at St. John’s Catholic Church in Iola. They made their home in the Owl Creek area southeast of Yates Center most of their lives. Mr. Drain died March 10, 2004, and she moved to Iola a few years later.
She was a member of the Old Time Fiddlers, Pickers and Singers and the Kansas Chapter of the Polka Lovers Klub of America. She enjoyed doing crafts with Charles and woodworking.
She is survived by two sons, Richard Drain, Iola, and Thomas Drain, Oxnard, Calif.; a daughter, Ruth Allen, Independence; a sister, Irene Orth, Phoenix, Ariz.; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter Doris Robinson, three grandchildren, five brothers, Ahman, William, Robert, Ray and Roy Karr, and sister June Dunlap.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola. Burial will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at Owl Creek. The family will receive friends this evening from 6 to 7 at the funeral home.
Memorial gifts to the American Cancer Society may be left with the funeral home.
