Doris Elizabeth Gorden, 89, rural Iola, died Saturday, May 12, 2012, at Coffey County Hospital in Burlington.
Doris was born Aug. 27, 1922, at Yates Center, the daughter of Albert and Emma (Opperman) Weide. She graduated from Yates Center High School and Iola Junior College, where she received her teaching certificate. She taught at Toronto and Onion Creek country schools.
On March 19, 1944, Doris married Gerald D. Gorden. They made their home on a farm southwest of Iola. She helped with the farming along with their fertilizer business. Mr. Gorden died March 19, 1988. On June 22, 1991, Doris married Vernon Diebolt.
She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and had been a 4-H leader, Sunday School teacher and church pianist.
She is survived by her husband, Vern Diebolt; three children, Gary Gorden, Chicago, Sharon Lawless and husband David, Coweta, Okla., and Debra Gamache and husband Dan, Derby; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters and four brothers.
Visitation will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Calvary United Methodist Church in Iola.
