Visitation for Serilda Cassandra “Cassie” Damron, whose death Sunday was reported in Monday’s Register, will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapels in Iola.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Chaplain Lloyd Houk will officiate. Burial will be in Toronto Cemetery.
She was born July 7, 1915, in Lebanon, to William and Alice (Bolson) Shephard.
On Aug. 8, 1929, she married Sheriden Damron in Fredonia. They made their home in Toronto. He died Feb. 24, 1947.
In 1954 she moved to Iola and began working at Iola Deluxe Cleaners. In 1958, she moved to LaJunta, Colo., and worked at LaJunta Laundry. She moved back to Iola in 1960.
When the Iola senior center opened at its original location on Madison Street she was one of the first volunteers. She volunteered until her health failed in June 2004. She attended board of director meetings for the Southeast Kansas Community Action Program as a representative from the Iola senior center and served as president, secretary and treasurer of the local board.
She was a member of Wesleyan Church and served on the church’s board.
She is survived by three daughters, Betty McDonald, Emporia, Shirley Swift and her husband, Bill White, Williamsburg, Colo., and Sharon Weide and her husband, Les, Iola; and more than 300 grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren.
Two sons, Leon and Wayne, two daughters, Barbara Damron and Pauline Schwintz, and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren died earlier.
