Carmen C. (Ramirez) Ornelas, 84, Humboldt, passed away Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at the Webb City Health and Rehabilitation Center in Webb City, Mo.
Carmen was born in Lawrence on Aug. 7, 1929, the daughter of Jesus and Mary Ramirez.
She was united in marriage to Ignacio “Nacho” Ornelas on March 1, 1946, in Lawrence. He preceded her in death on Aug. 17, 2003.
Carmen was a mother and homemaker. She enjoyed family gatherings, friends, walking her dog Thumper, and watching her grandkids play in the yard. She also enjoyed listening to Mexican and country music.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the St. Joseph Altar Society, and at one time, was a volunteer at the Iola Thrift Shop.
Carmen is survived by two sons, Nacho Ornelas Jr., Kent, Wash., and Tony Ornelas and his wife Susan, Humboldt; five daughters, Dodie Coker and her husband Roy, Lawrence, Victoria Lopez and her husband Steve, Carl Junction, Mo., Anna Chapman and her husband Bill, Humboldt, Karen Riggs and her husband Bradley, Gatesville, Texas, and Sharon Bauer and her husband Joe, Humboldt; 12 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; one step-great-great-granddaughter; four sisters; six brothers; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Nacho Ornelas; two grandchildren, Yolanda Oliphant and Gerald Riggs; one step-grandson, Matheau Chapman; two brothers, Fred and Daniel Ramirez; one daughter-in-law, Tomi Ornelas; and one brother-in-law, Gene Bucia.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. on Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Humboldt. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery in Iola.
Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church, followed by visitation in the Parish Hall.
Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church and left with Penwell-Gabel Humboldt Chapel.
