Carl “Junior” Dickinson, 87, died Thursday, March 31, 2011, in Owasso, Okla.
He was born on July 10, 1923, in Fort Scott, to Cleo Carl and Nellie Mae (Lesprance) Dickinson. He was reared and educated in Kansas and graduated with the Iola High School class of 1942. He continued his education at Pittsburg State University, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics.
He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater aboard the USS LaVallette during World War II.
On May 6, 1951, he married Doris Lorance in Iola. He spent most of his working life in the aerospace industry retiring as a program manager for Rockwell International in January of 1986. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Owasso, American Legion and The Tin Can Sailors (destroyer class members).
The couple moved to Owasso in 1968. He enjoyed a variety of pastimes including playing golf, fast pitch softball and working outdoors where he enjoyed mowing.
He is survived by his wife of the home; five children, Cathy Columbia and her husband, Dan, Claremore, Okla., Carl D. and his wife, Jody, Bedford, Texas, Craig and Barry and his wife, Tanya, both of Tulsa, Okla., and Brent, Broken Arrow, Okla.; 12 grandchildren, Douglas Dickinson, Dawn Rush, Cole Dickinson, Jamie McGovern, Gregory Berry, Andrea Donovan, Allie Dickinson, Katie Sherrell, Colton Dickinson, Brylee Dickinson, Casey Dickinson and Morgan Dickinson; 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister; Marcene Rafferty, Mohave Valley, Ariz.
A sister and one brother died earlier.
Funeral services were this morning at First Methodist Church in Owasso, with the Rev. Chris Tiger officiating.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Highland Cemetery in Iola.
