William G. “Billy” Roe, 89, of LaHarpe died today, June 1, 2010, at Iola Nursing Center.
He was born Jan. 6, 1921, in Iola, to George Birt and Susie Mary (Cummins) Roe. He grew up in LaHarpe and graduated from LaHarpe High School in 1938. On May 19, 1940, he married Doris May Spencer at her parents’ home northeast of Iola.
He was a lifelong farmer in the Welda and LaHarpe areas. He retired from Monarch Cement Company in Humboldt after 31 years of service.
He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Iola. He enjoyed family activities, farming, watching college basketball, sports, camping and traveling. He was a member of the Trailhound Camping Club.
He is survived by his wife of the home; three children, Barbara Diehl, Moran, and Kathryn Clemans and her husband, Arvin, and David and his wife, Debbie, Iola; five grandchildren, Becky Rodgers and her husband, Richard, Kevin Diehl and his wife, Diane, Stacey Billingsley and her husband, Jeff, Karrie Brown and her husband, Kent, and Jason Roe and his wife, Lindsey; and six great-grandchildren.
Two sisters, Florence Roe and Alice Irene Hake, a son-in-law, Jerry Diehl, and nephew, Gregory Hake, died earlier.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapels in Iola.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Calvary United Methodist Church in Iola. The Rev. Gene McIntosh will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Iola.
