Betty Gayle Smith, 85, Moran, died Saturday, Dec. 17, 2011, at Moran Manor.
She was born July 10, 1926, in Deerfield, the daughter of Clarence H. and Louise Lorene (Lehnus) Shepherd. She grew up in the Odense, Stark and Chanute areas, graduating from Chanute High School in 1944.
On Nov. 23, 1944, she married William V. “Willie” Smith in Columbus. They lived in Savonburg, Stark, Elsmore and most recently, Moran.
She managed Olson’s Grocery in Savonburg besides being a homemaker. She was a skilled seamstress and enjoyed reading and word puzzles. She taught Sunday School at Savonburg Christian Church.
Her husband of 67 years, survives, as do three daughters, Cheryl Wallis and her husband, Jerry, Margaret Jackman and her husband, Danny, and Nancy Houk and her husban, Lloyd, all of Moran; a sister, Lorene Reynolds, Redding, Calif.; four grandchildren, Donnie Van Wallis and his wife, Darla, Claremore, Okla., Jay Jackman and his wife, Sara, Savonburg, Anthony Houk and his wife, Janell, Parsons, and Andrea Hottenstein and her husband, Rickie, Humboldt; 10 great-grandhildren and one great-great-granddaughter on the way.
She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Tammy Lynn Wallis, a sister, Geneva Herrin, and four brothers, Basil, LeRoy, Howard and Jimmy Shepherd.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church in Iola. Burial will follow at Rosedale Cemetery northeast of Stark. She will lie in state this evening from 6 to 8 at Waugh-Yokum and Friskel Chapel in Iola.
Memorials are suggested to the Moran Manor Activity Fund and may be left with the funeral home.
