Iola police are waiting on a preliminary autopsy report to help them figure out how a construction worker died Monday at the site of a new elementary school.

The 33-year-old Haysville resident was found deceased in a portable restroom at the construction site for the new Iola Elementary School, Police Chief Jared Warner said.

It was not clear how the man died but there was no indication of anything suspicious, Warner said.

“We hope to have the results of the preliminary autopsy soon. That will answer some questions for us,” Warner said.

Another worker at the site discovered the man’s body in the parking lot area. Crews noticed he was missing and began a search, which led to the discovery. Police were notified at 3:50 p.m.

Superintendent Stacey Fager said the school district was immediately notified and he has been in communication with Randy Coonrod of Coonrod & Associates, the general contractor for the project.

The man worked as a painter for a subcontractor. He also did painting work at the science center at Iola High School, which opened in the fall.

“He was a very skilled young man. We’re very sad for the young worker and his family,” Fager said.

“It’s a very unfortunate situation.”
