Since the group’s inception five years ago, the Wings of Warriors has doled out more than $35,000 in assistance to 120 cancer survivors, representing every community in the county.

Those numbers are increasing in leaps and bounds each year.

Through October, Wings of Warriors has distributed $14,500 to 50 recipients.

Now, on top of the cash assistance, Wings of Warriors has found another avenue to help cancer survivors.

The non-profit organization is now ready to launch its transportation system, taking patients to and from appointments across the region.

The 2014 Kia Forte was purchased from a relative of one of the group’s earliest beneficiaries.

“Her mother-in-law passed away, and they didn’t need the car,” noted Jessica Oswald. “They gave us a call and offered an excellent deal on it.”

The sleek red four-door comfortably sits four — enough for the driver, the patient and a family member, if desired (unless multiple patients are taken at the same time).

The acquisition had been one of the group’s goals from the start, Capper noted.

“When we first started, we figured it’d be 10 years before we could get a car,” she said. “We got it at five.”

Rides will be kept within a short radius to start, with trips to Chanute, Garnett and, if necessary, Fort Scott or Pittsburg.

Reservations must be made at least 48 hours in advance by calling (620) 228-7949.

“If we don’t answer, we’ll get back to you as soon as possible,” Capper said.

The new phone number is courtesy of a donated cell phone to Wings of Warriors as well.

THE GROUP’S mission is to provide assistance so cancer survivors do not have to pay costs out of pocket for such things as transportation or medication, or to cover unrelated expenses, such as utility bills.
