The Allen County Wings of Warriors Cancer Foundation is all revved up.

Now, the members are looking for someone to take along for the ride.

The Wings of Warriors assists local cancer survivors through a number of means, primarily by donating gift cards to help cover out-of-pocket expenses for such things as transportation or medication; or for unrelated items.

The organization received a bit of good news earlier this month to help get its patient transportation effort on the road.

The Health Forward Foundation has awarded an $11,000 grant to Wings of Warriors to help cover maintenance, fuel and other costs for the organization’s newly acquired 2014 Kia Forte.

The car was purchased last fall, and will be used to take cancer patients to and from area doctor’s appoints.

Now, they just need passengers.

“I’m kind of surprised nobody’s called us yet,” WOW member Adelina Holloway said.

The red four-door comfortably sits four — enough for the driver, the patient and a family member, if desired (unless multiple patients are taken at the same time).

Rides will be kept within a short radius for now, with trips to Chanute, Garnett and, if necessary, Fort Scott or Pittsburg.

Reservations should be made at least 48 hours in advance by calling (620) 228-7949.

For now, it’s a matter of letting the public know the ride service is available, Holloway said.

All transportation services are offered free of charge to the patient.
