GREAT BEND — Clara Wicoff, sixth-grader at Iola Middle School, was eliminated in the third round Saturday at the Sunflower Spelling Bee at Barton Community College.
Wicoff, daughter of Iolans Joel and Lisa Wicoff, correctly spelled “interrupt” and “biblical” before being eliminated with “beauteous.”
Three spellers lasted to round eight of the bee. Matthew Wegner, a seventh-grader from Service Valley Charter Academy in Labette County, correctly spelled “viscidity” and then “meloplasty” to take the crown.
Ryan Crist from Sedgwick County was second. Isaac Nichols of Cowley County finished third.
Wegner will advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., in June.
