These homes in the 400 block of East Jackson Avenue will be demolished to accommodate construction of a new science building for iola High School.

USD 257 was expected to finalize the purchases of four properties near Iola High School this week. The project’s general construction manager will set a date for demolition; board members last week reviewed proposals for a construction manager and were expected to make a decision soon. The district plans to break ground for the new science and technology building in November, with the facility opening to students in the fall of 2020.

Environmental testing is expected to take place soon at the site of a proposed elementary school near Kentucky and Monroe streets. Contracts or consent agreements have been reached with each land owner, with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment allowed to begin testing starting Monday. The district plans to break ground at that site in March 2020, with the elementary school opening in the fall of 2021.
