Iola Mayor Jon Wells announced Monday that he has filed for re-election.

Wells is nearing completion of his first two-year term as mayor, following a stint as an Iola City Council member.

Meanwhile, Councilman Aaron Franklin, who represents Iola’s Fourth Ward in the southeast part of town, announced at Monday’s City Council meeting that he will not seek another term.

Franklin encouraged other residents in his ward to consider running.

Council members Chase Martin (Ward 1) and Kim Peterson (Ward 3) said they have not yet decided whether to seek a full, four-year term on the Council. Both were appointed to their respective seats within the past two years.

Daniel Mathew, who represents Ward 2, was absent from Monday’s meeting. His seat also is up for re-election.

Residents have until June 3 to file for a Council seat.

A primary election, if necessary, will be held in August; the general election will be in November, with the new terms beginning next January.
