USD 257 elementary students soon will have a new school to call home.
District voters overwhelmingly approved construction of a new elementary school for preschool through fifth-grade students, at a cost of $25.5 million.
The school will consolidate Iolas three existing elementary schools McKinley, Jefferson and Lincoln. Voters favored the school proposal 1,212 to 669.
Voters also said yes to a new science and technology building at the Iola High School campus, for $7 million. The building will offer science, engineering, family and consumer education classes and more for both high school and middle school students. It also will include a cafeteria with commons area, and will serve as a storm shelter for all high school and middle school students and staff. That question was favored by a 1,200 to 670 margin.
Finally, voters agreed, 1,272 to 599, to replace aging heating, ventilation and cooling systems, and the hot water system at Iola Middle School for $2.8 million.
A handful of provisional ballots are still to be counted before the election is certified by the county.
