The Rev. Jocelyn Tupper gave a program on how to practice sincere listening at a meeting of United Methodist Women. As United Methodist Women, we come together from different backgrounds, different ways of thinking, and different talents in order to be in mission in our churches, communities, and world. In order to best witness and serve, we need to connect with our brothers and sisters be truly in the presence of each other to listen and understand, Tupper said.
Donna Grigsby updated members about the May 17-20 Quadrennial UMW Assembly in Columbus, Ohio. The assembly will focus on spiritual wholeness, maternal and child health, climate justice, mass incarceration, and economic inequality.More information about the assembly can be found at its website, umwassembly.org . Iolas UMW unit was recently awarded the book, Indigenous Peoples History of the U.S., according to Linda Johnson.
Gerry Uphoff talked about a school in Texas that works with special needs children. A story about a boy with cleft palate was particularly moving, Uphoff said.

The unit hosted the Five Rivers District Spring Meeting on April 21 at Calvary. Pins celebrating UMWs 150s of service were distributed.
The Iola unit has fulfilled requirements as a 7-Star Unit and Mission-Do Unit.
The next meeting is at 6 p.m. May 24 beginning at Windsor Place for singing with the residents who wish to participate. A short meeting and refreshments will follow at Calvary United Methodist Church. Hostesses are Mary Joseph, Charlotte Flener, Jan Knewtson and Mary LaCrone.
