UNIONTOWN — Two years ago Joe Kuns hadn’t used a camera much.

Then, a photography instructor at Uniontown High changed his focus on life. The UHS senior is now looking forward to a career as a photographer.

“I had no clue what I was doing with a camera when I started,” Kuns told the Register. Since then, he’s picked up skills along the way — mostly by his own undertaking.

Kuns recently submitted a photo of a butterfly to Grit magazine, a national magazine with a focus on rural life. The magazine published Kuns’ photo in the May/June issue of Grit.

Kuns photographs for the UHS yearbook class. He has taken wedding, engagement, and senior class photos. He admits nature and sports are his favorite subjects to shoot.

“I’m a guy and I like taking nature and being outside a great deal. Plus I enjoy sports so I enjoy shooting those as well,” Kuns said.

Kuns and his classmates graduate from Uniontown High Tuesday. He said he is going to Fort Scott Community College next year for business classes.

“I really want to start my own photography business and make it my career. I can do the studio work but I’m looking to take nature and sports for magazines — be a free-lance photographer or get on at a publication maybe,” Kuns said.

Kuns said it was great to have one of his photos published by a national magazine.
