Sitting right in the heart of the town square at 110 S. Jefferson in Iola, the mother and son duo of Karla and Terrell Ingroum, stand behind a counter acting as mad scientists of all things sweet, sugary and delicious.
Trying to delve into the teams mind could result in a sugar overload.
They believe that there is nothing too sweet and there is no combination that is off limits.
This week has been training time at UdderButters Ice Cream Shop, which is set to open Friday.
On Tuesday afternoon Terrell and friend Joe Gagne practiced the art of making waffle cones and waffle bowls, which they soon had perfected. After that, they began experimenting with waffle tacos. One of their specialties will be edible cookie dough. A single bite of the chocolate chip cookie dough is enough to make ones blood sugar spike.
When it is heated it kills the bacteria and of course there are no eggs in it. We will have chocolate chip, browner batter, sugar cookie, but you can just about put anything in that as well. We will also do caramel. The sugar cookie dough will have sprinkles in it.
Browner batter tastes like edible brownie batter, that one could scoop right out of the pan, but has a much thicker consistency.
What comes as a surprise, was none of this was expected. Karla never dreamed of having her own ice cream shop.
It just came to me. I was passing by one day and thought, that looks like a cute place for an ice cream shop, Karla said with a laugh. I just love to eat.
The store will also have flavored popcorn, soda, and will make Italian sodas.
Italian soda is made of carbonated water combined with your choice of flavoring and a splash of cream.
The stores ice cream selections will include vanilla bean, butter pecan, cookie overload, cherry chocolate chunk, caramel waffle cone and strawberry cheesecake. Those that want ice cream without sugar can choose between vanilla and coffee.
Banana splits and other sundaes will also be offered.
Once things get going, they plan on progressing to no-churn ice cream with a Flavor of the Month. No-churn can be made in a variety of flavors. They even plan on making flavors that will include habanero pepper powder, to spice up some routine flavors.
As of Tuesday, the store had Butterscotch, Cinnamon Roll, Caramel, Cheddar, Jalapeno and Purple Popped Popcorn (the store refers to it as the Kansas State popcorn), made by Schlaegels Popcorn in stock. More flavors are expected in the future.
