Two Iolans have filed applications with the hopes of being appointed to the Iola City Commission.

Mayor Jon Wells received applications from Ward 2 residents Daniel Mathew and Nickolas Kinder to replace Bob Shaughnessy, who resigned from his seat in April.

Wells is expected to appoint Shaughnessy’s replacement at a 6 p.m. Monday Council meeeting, subject to approval from the other remaining Council members.

MONDAY’S meeting will cover several topics, including:

— Discussions about adding a voluntary monthly fee onto customers’ utility bills to help fund recreation programs and maintenance of the city’s trail system.

— A request from Thrive Allen County to install and provide free electric service to the pocket park on the east side of the courthouse square.

— The city’s mill and overlay maintenance schedule for 2018.

— A sewer pipe-lining maintenance project.

— Utilizing transfers from the city’s utility reserves to fund a Capital Improvement Plan for gas, water, electric and wastewater projects.

— A contract with Burns & McDonnell to help develop a master plan for the city’s water and wastewater systems.

— The city’s annual contract with the Iola Municipal Band to provide weekly concerts at the bandstand for the 2018 summer season.

— A potential franchise agreement with JMZ Corporation (KwiKom) for the company to utilize the city’s right-of-way to provide fiber optic cable for Iola.

— The city’s work with the Farm-City Days Committee for the committee’s first-ever summer concert. Country music stars Jack Ingram and Frankie Ballard will perform July 14 at the Davis Soccer Fields.

The public is invited.
