Persephone Burleson’s poster about trees and what they offer the environment is being recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation and the Iola Tree Board.
The Jefferson Elementary School fifth-grader’s poster was judged to be the best in southeast Kansas in a recent contest. Burleson’s poster was framed and she received an artist’s easel and oil, acrylic and watercolor paints.
In addition, Burleson and 79 other competitors from USD 257 each received a small redbud sapling to plant.
Burleson’s poster declares “Trees are terrific and energy wise!”
Keirstan Peters, a Lincoln Elementary School fifth-grader, received honorable mention. She, too, had her poster framed.
The Iola Tree Board once again is celebrating Arbor Day — always the last Friday in April — with a tree sale today at Riverside Park behind the Recreation Community Building.
Tree Board member Roberta Shirley said maples, forest pansy redbud, Jane magnolia, ‘Centurion’ flowering crab, Cleveland pear, bur oak and Shumard oak trees will be sold.
Shirley said the Tree Board is considering a fall tree sale. To preorder for fall, e-mail [email protected].
The celebration coincides with Iola’s declaration, once again, as a Tree City USA. A Tree City flag flew over City Hall Friday.
