In light of the overwhelming community support trailing the formation of USD 258s new trapshooting team, the board of education has agreed to allow trap club participants to receive a letter in the sport.
A main pillar of the original proposal for the clubs formation was that the district would not fund or any other way extend material assistance to the club, and would limit its support to the permission it granted the shooting club to compete under the Humboldt Cub name.
Tuesdays move bends this rule, if only slightly. Those kids will be working hard and spending their time, said Superintendent of Schools Kay Lewis, and I just felt like those ninth- through twelfth-graders should be able to get a letter like everybody else.
According to Josh Wrestler, a USD 258 board member and the teams first coach, more than 40 students have expressed interest in joining the team, and enthusiasm continues to grow. I think its going to be really good, said Wrestler. Weve had a lot of help from the community. Weve got two guns purchased for the club. Lots of shells promised. Weve talked about a fundraiser: Were probably going to raffle off a lifetime hunting and fishing license and maybe something else if I can talk my mom into quilting. Plus, were going to file some grants to try to help fund it. … Quite a few parents have offered to help. And other parents said they were excited because I think there were four or five kids [who attended a recent organizational meeting] that dont participate in anything else, theyre not in sports or band, and so this would give them a chance to letter in something.
Finally, the board approved for the building trades program a plumbing bid from D&J Heating and Cooling for $10,800, an electrical bid from D&J for $1,900, and an HVAC bid from D&J for $7,260. The board also approved a $3,500 bid from Delberts Septic for the installation of three additional sinks in the mens restroom at the sports complex, bringing the total number of sinks to four.
