The Iola Fillies volleyball team hosted their home invitational on Saturday and struggled at times, falling 1-2 and failing to advance out of pool play.
The invitational brought Burlington, Pittsburg, Labette County, Prairie View, Anderson County, Parsons and Caney Valley split into two pools with the top two teams advancing.
The Mustangs started off the day on the right foot, as they had little problem with Caney Valley winning in two sets (25-19, 25-14).
Senior Colbi Riley led the way offensively, recording six kills while junior Piper Moore followed behind with five kills and a team-leading six aces.
After Caney Valley, the struggle increased as they fell to Pioneer League power Burlington in two sets (18-25, 16-25)
Moore led the way in this one, getting six kills and three aces. Junior Shaylee Sutterby followed behind with two aces of her own.
The fight remained with the Fillies, going into the third match of the day versus Labette County.
The Lady Grizzlies won a knockdown drag-out first set 27-25 before finishing Iola off in set two 18-25.
Moore added 8 more kills to her total while Riley pitched in three. The Fillies also were able to get to the net versus Labette, recording their only blocks of the day as Riley had 1.5 and Sutterby and senior Katie Bauer had one apiece.
Even with the short day, Moore turned in a pretty impressive statline finishing the tournament with 21 kills, 9 aces and 15 assists. Riley was the only other Fillie to record double-digit kills with 12. Senior Chloe Gardner led the team in digs with 12 and junior Mia Aronson recorded a team-high 25 assists in the three matches.
The Fillies will remain at home as they host Burlington, Anderson County and Osawatomie on Tuesday. The matches start at 4:40.
