BURLINGTON — A mother and her two young daughters were killed in a pre-dawn house fire in Burlington Friday.

Jennifer Rose Pope, 27, and her children, Hope and Faith Garrett, 6 and 5, respectively, were killed when their house in the 200 block of Hudson Street caught fire. The first call to 911 was reported at 4:48 a.m.

The single-story home was fully engulfed by the time emergency responders arrived.

A fourth person, whose name was not released, escaped from the home. He was airlifted to a Wichita hospital for treatment of severe burns, Coffey County Sheriff told WIBW News.

The fourth occupant was not a family member.

A deputy broke out a window in an unsuccessful attempt to get the three victims out of the home.

“To have a tragedy in your community is a tough thing, but then to add children to the picture, I mean I’m a father, I have children, I have grandchildren,”  Rogers said. “A lot of people are hugging their children a little tighter today.”

The girls’ grandmother, Sandra Garrett, told KSNT News the girls were set to begin school this week.

“I just want to bring my babies back,” Garrett said. “Those were grandma’s girls.”

Funeral arrangements are pending.

The state fire marshal’s office is investigating the cause of the fire.
