Linda Sigg became the third candidate to become Iola’s next mayor as the filing deadline nears for candidates to declare for a seat in the city’s new governing body.
Sigg, co-owner of Party Girls, joins current City Commissioner Bill Shirley and Iolan John Smith as mayoral candidates. Efforts to reach Sigg before presstime this morning were not fruitful.
Candidates for Iola’s and other city races have until noon Tuesday to file. Iola and Humboldt council or mayoral candidates must file locally at City Hall. All others must file at the county clerk’s office.
Iola’s new eight-member city council will officially replace the existing three-member commission April 18, their first meeting date after the April 5 general election.
The council will feature two representatives from each of Iola’s four voting wards.
So far, Scott Stewart, Nancy Ford and Steffen Centlivre have filed for seats in Ward 1; Joel Wicoff, Dana Moodie, Melinda Luttrell and Beverly Franklin filed to represent Ward 2; Eugene Myrick, Jim Kilby and Don Becker hope to represent Ward 3; and Jim West, Gary Wells, Ken Rowe, Jerod Kelley and Richard Gilliland are seeking to represent Ward. 4.
City Treasurer Deb Troxel is the only candidate to have filed to retain her position. The treasurer’s position was formerly an appointed seat, but became an elected one with the new city council.
Each of the new elected city officers will serve two-year terms. Changes in term length or plans to stagger elections must be done through charter ordinances drafted by the new council.
