It’s a new season with a new energy for the Iola Area Symphony Orchestra.
Raúl Munguía, director of orchestras for Pittsburg State University, is the Iola orchestra’s new conductor, replacing longtime conductor Gregory Turner of Fort Scott.
Munguía’s debut will be Saturday night, when the orchestra takes the stage at 7 o’clock at the Bowlus Fine Arts Center.
Daniel Kays, director of the Bowlus, oversees the orchestra’s programming, noting the orchestra dissolved its non-profit status in 2018 to come under the Center’s umbrella along the same time that Kays took the helm.
Kays said that he and Munguía have their sights on growing the orchestra’s presence by expanding its repertoire to include performances akin to the Boston Pops Orchestra, as well as dance and vocal elements, and guest conductors.
“Everyone is open to absorbing this new voice,” Kays said of Munguía.
Munguía’s presence in the community of Pittsburg has grown exponentially. Under his guidance, Pittsburg now has the Pittsburg Music Festival, a summer affair that brings many local, regional and nationally renowned artists.
The Iola orchestra is growing, as well.
“It’s a good-size orchestra,” said Kays, who plays trumpet.
About 40 members comprise the local group.
“We have a very strong string section,” Kays said, noting there are eight who play violin, three on viola, five on cello, and a bassist.
“This depth allows new layers of character and color because of his knowledge,” Kays said of Munguía.
The orchestra practices two hours a week.
So do you have to be a professional to belong to the orchestra?
Kays smiled.
