A Register newspaper carrier escaped serious injuries after she was struck by a car while delivering papers on the Iolan square downtown Monday afternoon.

A vehicle driven by Scott Frey, 47, Emporia, struck Judith Branstetter, 19, as she attempted to cross Jackson Aveue on the west side of Jefferson Avenue at 1:47 p.m., according to Iola Police Lt. Steve Womack.

Frey was driving westbound when he stopped at a stop sign at Jefferson, then proceeded through the intersection and struck Branstetter, Womack said.

Branstetter was hit by the left front fender, struck the windshield and was thrown about 10 feet, Womack said. Frey stopped immediately and reported the accident. At least three people witnessed the accident, Womack said.

Branstetter was taken by ambulance to Allen County Regional Hospital.

Branstetter suffered only abrasions and seemed to be doing well, her mother said. Doctors at one point suspected a broken leg but found that was not the case.
