Signing on to be a new fifth-grade teacher at Jefferson Elementary School meant coming home for Callie Minor.
Literally.
Minor’s parents recently finished building a new home which opened the opportunity for her to move into her vacated childhood home in Neosho Falls. Minor and her husband, Kelly, were married in June.
“I was teaching at Pittsburg but this gave me the opportunity to come back,” she said. “This is like my first year all over again. A new school and a new grade level.”
Minor graduated from Yates Center High School and Emporia State University.
“I was a teacher’s aide my senior year of high school and I decided to get into teaching from there,” she said.
She will instruct science for the Jefferson fifth graders.
“I’m looking forward to getting to know the kids,” she said. “They all have a story.”
Minor prefers her students to jump into hands-on learning in the classroom.
“I think it can be a boring subject for students, so hopefully it strikes an interest in them,” she said. “We will do lots of experiments and hands on material that will tie back into the book lessons.”
When Minor isn’t in the classroom she prefers to be outside.
“I like to hunt, ride four-wheelers, fish,” she said. “The complete opposite of being inside all day.”
