“One in our hearts … one in our arms” was foremost in the minds of McKinley Elementary School’s Team Welch members as they collected more than $2,500 for the March of Dimes.
Faculty and staff members at the school embraced the memory of Kalli Welch who died in infancy and rejoiced in the remarkable strides made by Kooper Welch who was born 13 weeks too soon. They are the children of Scott and Amy Welch.
Amy, a teacher at McKinley, said Kooper is 8 months old and thriving.
Kooper spent 106 days in a neonatal intensive care unit before being able to go home.
“I appreciate all the support of the community and our friends in giving to the March of Dimes. Hopefully there will come a day when families in Kansas will no longer know the feeling of watching their babies struggle in the NICU,” Amy said.
About 20 friends and relatives of Team Welch will march for babies today in Lawrence at a March of Dimes rally.
