Weather enthusiasts and storm spotters can learn about savage storms and wild weather Thursday at an annual presentation by the National Weather Service of Wichita.
Storm Fury on the Plains will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Creitz Recital Hall at the Bowlus Fine Arts Center. Because of construction, attendees are asked to enter from the alley.
The event is good for both beginning weather enthusiasts and experienced storm spotters who need a refresher course, Jason Trego, Allen County Emergency Management Coordinator, said.
“The most important part of this training is for everyone to walk away knowing storm safety, how to keep themselves safe in severe weather that we are absolutely prone to have in Kansas, and also how to keep others safe,” Trego said.
Attendees will learn about different types of storms, how thunderstorms and tornadoes form, visual clues to look for and severe weather safety. Attendees will learn how to look at a radar display and identify a hook echo or look at clouds in the sky and understand what’s going on, Trego said.
“You’ll be able to see what’s going to happen with the storm, what direction it is moving and know where to be in order to not be in its path,” he said.
You’ll also learn how to report severe weather to the National Weather Service or to the local emergency management offices, Trego said.
Anyone can attend the training. There is no cost. Additional sessions by the National Weather Service will be Feb. 15 at Yates Center and April 9 at a location to be determined in Neosho County.
