THAYER — A Thayer school project has evolved into a community ag center.
The shell of a barn that was to be used for agricultural classes and a host of other activities was erected a few years back before the project was shelved, the Parsons Sun noted.
Now, Thayer Principal Aaron Rehmert has spearheaded a grassroots effort to finish construction.
Rehmert told the newspaper the group will need at least $40,000 to get the building in a functional condition. Local farmers David and Barbara Powers directed $5,000, via a Bayer Fund America’s Farmers Grow Communities fund to kickstart the fundraiser.
The goal is for the center to be used by elementary school teachers for supplementary education, moving forward to agriculture education, science and math outside of the typical classroom to gain hands-on experience, the newspaper said.
The concept is for the ag center to consist of a barn, lab, kitchen, breeding area and indoor holding pens for large and small animals so teachers could bring in animals and kids could talk about them or work with them.
