TOPEKA — The 31st Judicial District Nominating Commission will convene by telephone conference at 7:30 a.m. Monday to discuss the nomination process to fill a new district judge position.
The new district judge position was among several certified earlier this year by the Supreme Court after funding was approved by the State Legislature.
The 31st Judicial District covers Allen, Neosho, Wilson and Woodson counties.
The public can listen to the meeting by calling (866) 705-2554 and entering 895421# as the pass code.
Those with disabilities should notify the judicial branch ADA coordinator at ADA@ kscourts.org, or by calling (785) 295-2256.
Nominees must be at least 30 years old, live within the judicial district and a lawyer engaged in law practice for at least five years as either a lawyer, judge or full-time teacher at an accredited law school.
The nominating commission will select three to five people and submit those nominees to the gover, who has 50 days to decide whom to appoint.
If there is an insufficient number, the commission may consider nominees from outside the 31st Judicial District.
The appointee would stand for a retention vote in the next general election to remain in office. If retained, the judge would serve a four-year term.
The 31st Judicial District Nominating Commission consists of Justice Evelyn Wilson as the nonvoting chair; Richard Pringle, Chanute; Nancy Burns and John Chenoweth, Fredonia; Douglas Depew, Neodesha; Craig Mentzer, Neosho Falls; Shelia Lampe, Piqua; Donald Greg Taylor, Stark; and Zelda Schlotterbeck, Yates Center.
