Joelle Shallah, owner of Bella Donna Salon on North Jefferson Street, is raising awareness for breast cancer and showing “support” — by hanging it in a tree.
Shallah has been raising funds for the Kappa Alpha Chapter of the Phi Tau Omega sorority for more than five years. Last year was the first year she started her “bra tree” fundraiser. For $5, and a bra, people can hang their lingerie in the tree. All of the money stays local.
“I like to keep everything here,” Shallah said. “Instead of sending it out nationally.”
The small tree is quite a spectacle for passers-by. Shallah said she has known several women affected by breast cancer, and she will do anything to raise money and awareness to combat the disease.
“I’m just trying to give something back to the community,” she said.
In addition to the bra tree, her salon is selling “pink” merchandise. All of the proceeds will support the cause as well. Last year, she said her salon raised more than $500 to donate to Kappa Alpha, and she hopes this year will be better than ever.
