Aubrey Holloran was no country girl.

She didn’t grow up on a farm. She doesn’t own farm animals.

But her freshman year at Crest, one of her teachers suggested she join FFA.

“I’m not a farmer. I can’t,” Holloran replied.

“That’s not what it’s about at all,” the teacher said.

Turns out, she was right. Holloran grew to love FFA.

She’s still not a farmer. But maybe she’s a little bit country, after all.

She learned how to judge poultry, and really enjoys food science events.

In food science, students learn about food product development, presentation and food safety issues. They use their senses to solve problems and make decisions.

For example, they might need to taste samples of a food product and decide which is the brand name and which are generic.

Wheat Thins are very difficult to judge, Holloran explained.

“You have to use your taste buds to determine the differences. Different texture. Which one is drier. Things like that.”

Food science is an important field of study, Sprague said. She has learned important skills and has a better understanding of how food is developed and made safe.

She’s also learned valuable public speaking skills, as well as build connections with her peers across the state.

“You learn how to come out of your shell and be more adult.”
