Summer means school is out and lounging by the swimming pool is de rigueur — for most young students. For Anna Setter, however, it means getting ahead and being productive.

Setter, 16, is interning this summer at the K-State Southwind Extension District office. There, she likes “working with the ladies. I have learned things here that I will use for the rest of my life,” she said.

While at the extension office Setter is working on designing projects such as post cards. She gained experience with the computer program Photoshop because of her work with the Humboldt High School student newspaper, where she will be editor in chief next year.

At school she also plays volleyball, is vice president of student council and is part of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA).

Setter is vice president of Logan Pals 4-H club in Humboldt, where she also is involved in the Kansas Youth Leadership Council and is a food leader.

Because of her involvement with 4-H she knows she wants to have a career in food. “I don’t know exactly what I want to do, but I do know I want to go to KSU and major in food science and culinology,” she said.

“If it wasn’t for 4-H I wouldn’t be where I am today,” Setter said. “I went to CAMPference and they saw something in me there. They pushed me to get involved.”

Setter’s passion and hobby are one in the same — food. She not only wants to make a career out of food, but in her free time likes cooking for her friends and family.

Setter sees the summer as a time where she can work on projects she doesn’t have time for during the school year. One such project is learning French. “I have recently been learning with a friend because I want to go there some day,” she said.

Setter has been taking college credit classes online and in the fall will be taking dual credit courses to get her ahead academically.

For the rest of her summer Setter is staying busy with week long projects like student council, the fair and volleyball.

Though she keeps busy, she still remembers the importance of spending time with family, “when I have time,” she said.
