HUMBOLDT — A Friday fiesta will feature a feast and fundraising in Humboldt.

Students at ATLAS School, a new education program through the ANW Special Education Cooperative, plan to have a Cinco de Mayo block party at 11:30 a.m. at 707 Bridge St. in Humboldt. The students will serve street tacos, Mexican street corn, rice and beans, with water and Strawberry Agua Fresca for a free-will donation.

In the event of rain, students will offer curbside service. Food will be served until it’s gone.

The students hope to raise money for equipment like bicycles and fishing gear, as well as fund education trips throughout the communities served by the ANW Cooperative, instructor Lisa Wallace said. The co-op serves eight area school districts. The ATLAS School opened in January as a way to teach life skills, offer community-based instruction and support a positive quality of life for middle and high school students.

Students learn about different states and cultures, Wallace said. The Cinco de Mayo celebration coincides with a recent program, even though, technically, Cinco de Mayo falls on Saturday.

ATLAS stands for “Academy of Thinkers, Learning and Scholars.”
