SAVONBURG — Savonburg Public Library is the recipient of the first Southeast Kansas Library System (SEKLS) Excellence Award.

In nominating the Savonburg Library for the award, library trustee Marilyn Logan and Director Kathy Hale described the library as a vital part of the city, striving to provide the best programs and materials to keep the community educated and involved.

Letters of support included mention of the summer reading program, an annual party for Dr. Seuss’ birthday, the American Girl tea party, an eclipse viewing party in conjunction with Savonburg PRIDE, as well as a bike sharing program with Thrive Allen County.

The library has altered days open to enhance patron access to the internet, and there is free Wi-Fi outside the building when the library is closed.

The Excellence Awards were announced June 1 at the SEKLS annual meeting in Iola. A trophy and check for $1,000 to the library will be presented by SEKLS director Roger Carswell at 7 p.m. July 2 at the Savonburg City Council meeting.

The public is invited to share in the celebration.
