Savonburg is celebrating.
The city is planning a day’s worth of events including the grand opening of the new Savonburg City Park, along with recycling events, music, library events and more.
The festivities kick off at 9 a.m. Saturday with the Trash to Treasure Exhibition in the Community Center.
The exhibition encourages projects that demonstrate the use of materials in a way that reduces, reuses, recycles, repurposes, renews or restores. It could include a poster or drawing with an idea, or a project. Examples include used clothes or material that has been repurposed, recycled metal work, or something made from an old book or magazine.
Prizes will be awarded.
Entries will be received from 2 to 6 p.m. Thursday or from 10 a.m. to noon Friday. They’ll be on display from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Information is available at the Savonburg Public Library.
AT 11 a.m., a ribbon cutting at the park will recognize efforts to build a playground and other amenities.
The property was donated by the Savonburg Bible Church in 2019. Savonburg PRIDE’s volunteers have worked hundreds of hours to make the playground and park a reality. Everything is made from recycled or repurposed material.
At 11:30 a.m., the Neosho River Boys Band will perform outside the park, weather permitting. In case of rain, they will move to the library.
Story time at the library will follow at 12:30, with author Ruth Zimmerman reading “Emmy Rides Again.”
ALONG with the activities, a book and DVD sale will be offered from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. to benefit the library.
A silent auction on computers and library equipment will take place from 9 to 1:30 p.m.
Refreshments are offered by the Jolly Go Getters 4-H Club, which will have a bake sale and beverages, and Chuckie’s Little Smokehouse, which offers sandwiches and sides.
The event is sponsored by Savonburg PRIDE and the Savonburg Public Library.
