The Allen County Historical Society finally has a secure place to store its valuable artifacts after Community National Bank donated a 9,000-pound safe to the organization Thursday.
For the past five decades, the historical society often stored its more valuable historical pieces off-site in undisclosed locations.
“We’d have to store stuff in the empty spaces above businesses and now every single piece of our history will be kept in our facilities,” said Jeff Kluever, director and curator for ACHS. “We didn’t feel safe not having another level of protection.”
CNB purchased the vault, technically a portable safe even though it weighs 4½ tons, in 2001 when it opened at its first location on State Street. After the bank moved to its location at 120 E. Madison in 2002, the vault, used as a safety deposit box, was placed in storage.
