Tara Gardens’ days are numbered.
The Iola residential care facility will close its doors for good Sept. 30.
Many of the residents are being relocated to Greystone Residential Care — formerly Fountain Villa — at 2620 N. Kentucky St. in Iola.
Fountain Villa was purchased in January by Dimensions in Senior Living, the same management company for Tara Gardens.
Ongoing maintenance issues at the old Tara Gardens building at 1110 E. Carpenter St. have become cost-prohibitive, explained Amy Wilcox-Burns, operations manager at Dimensions.
She noted the Greystone property contains 7 acres, large enough to accommodate expansion, if necessary.
The Tara Gardens closure involves notifying residents and the Kansas Department of Aging and Disability Services.
Not all of the residents will move to the newer facility.
Some may transfer to Arrowood Lane — also a Dimension property — in Humboldt, while others may choose to find an alternative facility in or near Iola.
“With this type of facility, the population in a center can fluctuate up and down,” Wilcox-Burns said. “We anticipate almost all of our residents will be relocated by the first week of September.”
She credits the Tara Gardens and Greystone staffs for making the transition seamless for the residents.
“They’ve done an awesome job,” Wilcox-Burns said. “Our staff has been actively working with our residents and families.”
The Greystone building houses 26 beds, compared to 21 at Tara Gardens.
