LAHARPE More than 100 years ago, LaHarpes own Ad Brennan made a name for himself in Major League Baseball.
Born in 1887 in LaHarpe, Brennan pitched professionally for the Philadelphia Phillies, then for two seasons in the old Federal League for the Chicago Feds, and then briefly back in the majors with the Washington Senators and Cleveland Indians in 1918.
Fast forward a century.
LaHarpe resident Sandy Northcutt, a local history buff, would like to see LaHarpe celebrate Brennans athletic accomplishments.
She approached City Council members Wednesday about seeing a sign posted along U.S. 54, identifying Brennans career in the big leagues.
Shes already done much of the homework, noting such a sign is up to the state. But first, she needs permission from the city to make such an application. There also is a chance the state will fund the sign, she noted.
Council members, previously unaware LaHarpe had a professional athlete in its history books, eagerly endorsed the proposal.
COUNCIL members approved a five-year contract extension with Gas for oversight of the citys sewage lagoon, on the west edge of town.
The lagoon is co-owned by LaHarpe and Gas.
The contract spells out each communitys responsibilities in maintaining the lagoon system.
THE COUNCIL also:
Ratified the citys 2020 spending plan, supported with an property tax levy of a shade more than 70 mills. That equates to tax bill of about $407 for the owner of a $50,000 home (but does not count taxes paid to support the county, USD 257 or Allen Community College.)
Accepted a bid from Steve Robb, Gas, to purchase the citys old mosquito sprayer and welder, for $100 apiece. Robb submitted the only bids for either piece of equipment.
