Register takes home awards

The Iola Register placed in several categories at the annual Kansas Press Association 2010 Awards of Excellence convention Saturday in Topeka.
In the advertising competition, graphics designer Sarah Stansbury earned a first place award for an online ad featuring Diebolt Lumber and Supply, a second place for an agricultural ad featuring Allen County Livestock, and two third place awards for a fashion ad featuring Allen County Cleaners and a specialty ad for Iola Office Supplies.
In the news competition, Bob Johnson won first place in business reporting on Humboldt’s B&W Trailer Hitches and third place in education on Iola Middle School students participating in mock stock trading.
Sports reporter Jocelyn Sheets won first place for a sports photo featuring high school basketball and third place for a story on the IHS Fillies softball team winning their first-ever regional championship.
Reporter Anne Kazmierczak won second place for a news story on the demise of the 54 Drive-In at Gas.
Reporter Richard Luken won second place for a photo of a fiery airplane crash and also for a story about the tug-of-war over Allen County’s emergency management systems and third place for a sports feature on the Rev. Jim Rausch and his love of losing baseball teams.
Susan Lynn, Register editor and publisher, placed first for editorial writing, column writing and a feature story on the descendants of Charlie Melvin, the mad bomb-er; and second place for a series about rural health care.
About 3,000 entries submitted by 90 Kansas newspapers were judged by Nebraska journalists for this year’s competition.
The Register competes with other daily newspapers in its approximate size of circulation.
