Nine Iola Amateur Radio Club members and a guest discussed Thursday plans for their next field day activities Saturday and Sunday at Gale Jeffers’ home at 412 S. Broadway St. in LaHarpe.

Field day is an annual exercise to re-enact emergency communications preparedness in case of emergency.

With more than 30,000 operators in the U.S. taking part the fourth full weekend of June, the field day is typically the largest single emergency preparedness exercise in the country.

Setup will begin at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, with members beginning to power up their radios at noon. The exercise runs from 1 p.m. Saturday to 1 p.m. Sunday.

A potluck supper is planned at 6 p.m. Saturday. Meat and drink will be furnished. Members are asked to bring covered dishes, salads or desserts.

The next IARC meeting is at 7 p.m. July 12 at Iola City Hall.
