An investigation continues into the unattended death of Iolan Gabriel Toothman.

Police were called to 733 Wilson Ln. the morning of April 10, where Toothman, 24, was found unresponsive.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Iola Police Chief Jared Warner said subsequent interviews surrounding the death led Iola police to contact the Kansas Department of Investigation for assistance. Police have declined to say whether the death was considered suspicious.

Family members also are seeking answers, with limited success.

“You know about as much as we do,” Rhienna Toothman, Gabriel’s sister, told the Register.

Toothman lives in Oklahoma and stopped in Iola Monday to check with police on recent developments.

She said preliminary autopsy results into her brother’s death have been released to the family, but she had been asked not to reveal them.

Toothman said her brother had a drinking problem in the past, “but as far as I know, he’s been two-years sober.”

She said Gabriel was on a waiting list for alcohol addiction treatment. She was unaware if he had been using drugs.

He also had been unemployed, “looking for a job,” Toothman said.

Toothman’s death came just days after he had been charged in Allen County District Court with suspicion of disorderly conduct, stemming from a disturbance in the 500 block of South Jefferson Avenue in Iola on April 2.

“He’d had some troubles with the law,” Rhienna Toothman said.

According to court papers filed relative to the disorderly conduct charge, Toothman also had been seeking disability payments. The disability was not disclosed.

Rhienna Toothman said she and her brother were closed and stayed in touch on a regular basis.
